If you’re looking for the French Toast recipe you are in the right place!
If you follow me on Instagram Stories, you know my son loves breakfast… and the bigger and heartier the better!
French Toast is a favorite for all the obvious reasons — it’s hearty, delicious and satisfying! And especially if you’re a teen boy, those are definite requirements.
This recipe is adapted from Cooks Illustrated via a friend who shared it with us years ago. It was originally for challah french toast so we especially love it when we can cut thick slices of a gluten-free loaf but we think it works great with all bread!
And it’s EASY!
All you need is your favorite gluten-free bread (read about our favorites here), milk or dairy-free milk, butter or dairy-free butter, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, egg and gluten-free all-purpose flour (we use GF Jules – affiliate link)
As an aside, purchasing through an affiliate link generates a small percentage of the sale for me, but does not change your cost at all. So purchasing through an affiliate link helps me fund this website and all the recipes I share, so thank you!
Back to the french toast, the “secret ingredient” is the gluten-free flour which thickens the mixture and helps coat the bread with the other ingredients more so the french toast the best flavor and texture!
All you do is mix together the ingredients, soak the bread in the mix and pan cook.
And since I am always asked about the kitchen appliances and tools we love, we like to cook the french toast on our Calphalon Square Griddle (Amazon affiliate link).
We had this griddle for several years and make all our pancakes and french toast using it. W love how it heats evenly and cleans well!
Cook both sides until golden brown and then enjoy!
And on to important things… how do you enjoy your french toast? with maple syrup or powdered sugar?
I used to be all about the maple syrup but my son loooves it with powdered sugar (also known as confectioner’s sugar) and he may have converted me…. it’s sooooo good!
However you eat it, hope you love it as much as we do!

An easy, gluten-free french toast that tastes amazing! Just the right mix of ingredients for the best flavor and texture. Recipe doubles well. Recipe adapted from Cooks Illustrated.
This is hands down the best gluten free French toast I’ve ever had! The flour was such a game changer. I used Franz gluten free bread and it was AMAZING. Thanks for such a great recipe!
We made this for fathers day for my husband who can eat gluten, but the rest of the house can not – so the kitchen stays GF. This recipe was delicious and he was not phased at all that it was GF. Thank you for the great recipe
