Original post…
If you follow my Instagram Stories, you know our Easy Gluten-Free Biscuits have become a regular in our house the last few months. In fact, I think we’ve made them more in the last 8 weeks than we have in the prior 8 months!
And we’ve been loving them each and every time!
But we decided to amp them up a bit with some cheddar cheese and scallions and oh my goodness, so good!
Still pantry staple ingredients, still 5 minutes to prep and 20 minutes to bake!
Still the most amazing soft & fluffy texture, especially when warm and straight from the oven!
But… completely different flavor! So much savory goodness!
And I see lots of opportunity to customize the flavor with your favorite cheese, chives instead of scallions, bacon if you eat meat…
Before we get into how to make them, I have to share that the original recipe is from my grandmother.
In case you haven’t made the Easy Gluten-Free Biscuit, she called them baking powder biscuits (for the obvious reason, they require a lot of baking powder!) and she made them whenever she needed something quick!
I love the original hand-written recipe card she gave me long ago.
She was correct, “These are so fast to make and one of the best!”
The basic biscuit is only 7 ingredients — all pantry staples and is SOOOOO quick to make. Literally 5 mintues!
This savory version is the original 7 ingredients, plus 2 more for savory flavor… and just as quick!
All you need is:
all purpose flour (we used GF Jules – affiliate link)
baking powder
salt
a little sugar
milk
1 egg
a touch of butter
cheddar cheese and
scallions.
You may note that my Grandmother did not use egg but when we started making these gluten-free we felt the egg was necessary to get the soft and fluffy texture.
As an aside, you may have noticed that we are affiliate for GFJules. To learn more about why we love GFJules flour and why we have used it for 10 years, click here.
Bonus: at the bottom of that post is a one-time use affiliate Discount Code.
And importantly, purchasing through an affiliate link does not change your cost at all. It generates a small percentage of the sale for me, and purchasing through an affiliate link helps me fund this website and all the recipes I share, so thank you!
Back to the gluten-free savory biscuits…
They come together quickly!
You literally throw all the basic biscuit ingredients in one bowl and mix it up until well combined. Then add in the cheese and scallions and mix till just combined.
Then drop the batter into 6 biscuits on a baking sheet and bake!
In 20 minutes you have a warm, bread-y savory biscuit!
Just look at this texture!
And the melty cheese and scallions!
Best served warm, the are so flavorful and delish!
The perfect add to any meal!
And while I’ve only made them with cheddar and scallions, I think there’s a lot of opportunity to customize… you can swap out the cheddar for any cheese, though I happen to like the flavor of a strong cheddar. You could try chives instead of scallions. You could even try bacon in place of scallions if you eat meat.
Any way, they are easy, savory and delish!
Hope you love them as much as we do!

We amped up our Easy Gluten-Free Biscuit with some savory goodness! Still pantry ingredients, still just 5 minutes to prep, 20 minutes to bake and still a warm, bready biscuit.. but now with an amazing savory flavor! We added cheddar cheese and scallions but lots of opportunity to customize. See ideas below. Best served warm.

Servings: 6biscuits
Author: Healthy Gluten-free Family
Ingredients
Basic Biscuit
2cupsgluten-free all purpose flourwe used GF Jules- affiliate link
4teaspoonsbaking powder
1/4teaspoonsalt
1tablespoonsugar
1cupmilk
1egg
2tablespoonsmelted butter
Savory adds
1cupshredded cheddar cheeseor cheese of choice -- we used sharp cheddar cheese
1/2cupgreen onionssliced thin (about 1 bunch) (you could try chives or bacon)
Instructions
Preheat oven 400 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, blend all ingredients for the basic biscuit until well combined (I use a stand mixer to do this).
Add in cheese and scallions and mix to combine.
Scoop 6 large spoonfuls batter onto baking sheet gently forming a biscuit shape as need.
Bake 20 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. If at 20 minutes, tops are crisp but you want to cook the center an extra few minutes, gently cover with foil and bake additional 5 minutes.
I have been making the plain biscuits for some time now, and this was a duh moment for me when I saw this posted. Why have I never thought to add cheese until now. Such a game changer! We love them.
Made these tonight- I’m dairy free so I subbed almond milk for the regular milk and So Delicious brand cheddar jack for the cheese. They didn’t really brown up like the ones pictured but that doesn’t matter because they tasted so good! Highly recommend trying the recipe with the substitutes if you need to!
Hi just watched your video for the gluten free savoury biscuits. Question, have you ever made them with just all purpose flour vice using gluten free. If not would you recommend? I see your grandmother’s original recipe just called for all purpose flour. Thanks Wendy
These biscuits are the best. We are gluten free and dairy free so sub Miyokos oat butter, oat milk and shredded plant based cheddar. They came out just divine. Had to cook them for about 27 minutes before they brown up and were fluffy inside. A thousand thank yous!
I made these for Thanksgiving this year with the chives and cheddar cheese. I now want them at every meal. I want to make breakfast sandwiches on them. Eat them with soup at lunch. Something different for dinner or just biscuits for dinner. 10 stars out of 5.
True to form! Soft, moist and tasty! My husband couldn’t tell they were gluten free and he is a bona fide bread addict. We also made these with bacon and they were a hit!
Have you ever tried to make them without egg? I’d love to meet them but don’t eat eggs do you have any suggestions I know the original recipe didn’t call for them
I saw this recipe on Insta this arvo, jumped up and made it for my wife.
They look identical to the article images and taste grand!..
I didn’t have enough cheddar so added a 1/4 cup of shredded Pamesan cheese. We both love them!..

Yay! So happy you love them too!
What is shelf life?
Great question! We usually eat them immediately, but if extra will warm up in the microwave the next day.
These are phenomenal and super easy! It’s unreal how easy and delicious they are 🙂
Thank you! Happy you love them!
Can you use buttermilk to replace regular milk?
Great question! I’ve never tried it… should work but might need a little more if the dough seems too thick. Let me know if you try it with buttermilk.
These biscuits are fantastic! So easy to make, and so light and fluffy – it’s unreal. Thank you!
Happy you love them! Thank you!

Can you use almond flour instead of all purpose flour?
Great question! Unfortunately almond flour and all purpose flour are not generally interchangeable and almond flour will not work well in this recipe.
Lovely recipes Karen …Thank you……
