A Game Day Must - Easy Recipe for Gluten-Free Chicken Wings!

At the request of so many of you on Instagram stories, sharing our Gluten-free Crispy Chicken Wings!

They are a simple gluten-free recipe made with just a handful of ingredients and the wings are crispy, super flavorful and always a hit!

The wings themselves are well seasoned so enjoy as is, with a buffalo sauce or dip into a cooling blue cheese dip  (both recipes on this page below) or ranch dip.

And the recipe is naturally gluten-free! For those of you with celiac disease or a gluten allergy you know how frustrating it can be to not be able to enjoy chicken wings when at a restaurant often because of a shared fryer, sigh.

A little background…

If you’ve followed us a while, you probably know that I don’t eat meat (it’s a personal preference but I eat largely plant-based or vegetarian and enjoy some fish, especially salmon!). But… my family are omnivores who enjoy a wide variety of foods (as long as there’s no gluten!) and eat meat and lots of chicken!

These wings have been a favorite for yearrrsss.

Funny enough, they became a Thanksgiving tradition a few years ago when someone realized that as long as we had the fryer out for the turkey, might as well use it for wings too! (hence the flowers in the photo below from our Thanksgiving table)

And when I shared them twice on Instagram stories recently, lots of you requested the recipe.

So, I watched my husband make the wings several times and made him measure everything so that I could write an accurate recipe… and here we are!

So let’s make the Gluten-Free Crispy Chicken Wings!

They couldn’t be easier!

All you do is:

  • Mix together all the spices to make a really delicious spice seasoning. We use cayenne pepper, chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
  • Then toss the wings with the spice seasoning in a large bowl and let marinate for 2 hours.

Then using a fryer or large deep skillet, fry them in batches.

They cook in just about 8 minutes to crispy perfection!

You can double check the “done-ness” with a cooking thermometer if you like — they should be minimum 170 degrees F at the thickest point.

When they first come out of the fryer, we often place them on paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Then, if we’re not serving them immediately, we lay them on a baking rack so that they stay crispy.

As you can see, they are very well seasoned and super flavorful on their own. My family loves them as is.

But since so many people love chicken wings with buffalo sauce, I also share our buffalo sauce recipe (same one as on our amazing Buffalo Cauliflower Bites!)

All you need to make the Buffalo Sauce is:

a hot sauce (we used Franks Hot Sauce)

lemon juice, and

melted butter or dairy free butter

Mix whisk it all together and you have a perfect tasty Buffalo Sauce!

And again, my family loves these crispy, seasoned wings so much they eat them straight up!

But for those looking for a dipping sauce, we recommend two!

Both are easy to make, a cooling contrast to the spicy wings and perfect for dipping wings or veggies!

We love our Ranch Dressing.

And sharing a Blue Cheese Dip adapted from Food and Wine magazine.

It’s super quick and easy to make as all you do is mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.

Then it is perfectly cooling, tangy and delicious!

Crispy and flavorful, chicken wings are a appetizer classic! Perfect for any Game Day or party, they easy to make with just a handful of ingredients, can be fried in a fryer or on the stove, and are a sure hit! And, when made at home, they are naturally gluten-free!
Note: we fry them in batches. Each batch takes about 8 minutes and we've done them in 2 or 3 batches depending on how big the wings are, so I said 25 minutes in cook time but it could be less.

    Instructions

    Crispy Seasoned Chicken Wings

    • Mix together all the spices until well combined.
    • In a large bowl, add all the chicken wings, then pour seasoning all over the wings and with a large spoon or your hands preferably, mix so that all the wings are well coated with the spices. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let marinate for 2 hours in the refrigerator.
    • Using a fryer or large skillet, add oil and heat to 350 degrees F. (If deep frying in a fryer, add oil per the fryer's directions. If using a large deep skillet, add enough oil to cover pan well enough that wings will be partially submerged).
    • Place marinated chicken wings in the fryer or skillet in single layer. Cook for 4 minutes, then if using a fryer lift and shake, if using a skillet, carefully turn the wings over, and fry another 4 minutes. As a double check, using a cooking thermometer, the inside done temperature at the thickest part of the chicken should be minimum 170 degrees.
    • Carefully removed from fryer or hot oil using a slotted spoon or tongs, and place on a plate with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. If not serving immediately transfer to a baking rack so that they remain crispy.
    • If adding buffalo sauce, transfer cooked wings to a large bowl and toss with buffalo sauce to taste. Or serve buffalo sauce as a dipping sauce option.

    Buffalo Sauce

    • In a liquid measuring cup or small bowl, whisk ingredients together until well combined. Set aside.
    • Add buffalo sauce to taste to wings or serve as a dipping sauce.

    Blue Cheese Dip

    • In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup combine milk and 1 teaspoon lemon juice and let sit for 5 minutes to curdle and become "buttermilk"
    • In a medium bowl, stir together sour cream, mayonnaise, "buttermilk", and remaining lemon juice. Stir in blue cheese, salt and chive, reserving a few for garnish. Cover and refrigerate until serving.
