Our Family Bolognese Sauce

Recipe from my Italian Mother in law, this is a family favorite. Make a batch today, then keep some in your fridge and freezer for a quick, easy meal later in the week.

Simple, cozy & yummy!

Nothing better than a big bowl of pasta!

We always have a stash of my Mother in Law’s Bolognese Sauce in the refrigerator  fridge and freezer ready to heat up when the boys come home from school or practices ravenous.

It’s a quick, satisfying hot meal with minimal effort.

Recipe from my Italian mother-in-law, it’s just 1 onion, fresh 85% lean ground beef, white wine, tomato purée, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and spices.

It takes only 30 minutes to make, the house smells amazing while it simmers, and it makes a large batch.

We store the prepared sauce in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

We store in the freezer for up to a month.  When we freeze it, always let the sauce cool before putting in containers and leave some room at the top of the container because sauce expands when it freezes.

Note: When we freeze it, always let the sauce cool before putting in containers and leave some room at the top of the container because sauce expands when it freezes.

Ingredients
  • 2-3 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1-2 large clove garlic, minced
  • ½ pound fresh 85% lean ground beef meat
  • ¼ cup dry white wine
  • 1 6 oz gluten-free tomato paste (we use Muir Glen)
  • 1 15 oz can gluten-free tomato sauce (we use Muir Glen)
  • 2 750g (26.46 oz) boxes strained tomatoes (we use Pomi)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1- 2 tablespoon oregano
  • ½ - 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
  1. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium high heat. Add and sauté onion and garlic for about 5 minutes or until tender.
  2. Add fresh ground beef, mix to combine and saute until cooked, approximately 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add spices and mix to combine.
  4. Add wine, stir to combine. Then let wine boil off. It will visibly disappear, approximately 5 minutes.
  5. Add tomato paste and mix to combine.
  6. Add tomato sauce and mix to combine.
  7. Add strained tomatoes and mix to combine.
  8. Add about ½ to 1 cup boiling water depending on desired thickness.
  9. Add additional spices -- salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder to taste
  10. Let simmer for at least an hour.
